Manchester United vs. Wolves Preview
Match Previews, News | Harry | December 15, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping to mark his 900th league game as United manager with a victory against Wolves at Old Trafford tonight.
A disappointing defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend meant that United missed out on top spot after Chelsea’s defeat to Everton.
Despite dominating possession against Villa, United failed to create any clear cut chances on goal, something they will be hoping to address tonight.
However, Wolves are likely to try and match Villa’s industrious style and work rate as they look to recreate their 1-0 win over United in 2004.
In the meeting between the two sides in the Carling Cup earlier this season, it was Man Utd’s young guns that came out on top thanks to a Danny Welbeck goal.
Sir Alex is likely to field a much different side from the one that started that night, with Rafael in contention after recovering from injury.
If the young Brazilian is available then it would free up Darren Fletcher to move back to his regular role in central midfield.
Edwin Van Der Sar is unlikely to return before Saturday’s game at Fulham, so Tomasz Kuszczak is likely to start in goal again ahead of Ben Foster.
Newly crowned Sports Personality of the Year Ryan Giggs is a doubt with a hamstring injury picked up against Villa, but fellow veteran Paul Scholes is back in contention after serving a one match ban.
Wayne Rooney cut a forlorn figure alone in attack against Villa, so Sir Alex may decide to deploy a second striker against Wolves.
Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen will both be hoping to get the nod alongside Rooney, with Owen impressing against Wolfsburg and Berbatov looking to live up to his price tag.
The team will be disappointed with their performance at the weekend and Sir Alex is not one to take defeat too well so I fully expect United to bounce back with a convincing win.
Therefore, my prediction for tonight’s game is a solid 3-0 win for United. What are your predictions for tonight’s match?
