Manchester United have confirmed that Chris Smalling will join the club from Fulham in the summer.

The deal has been agreed in principle for the last few days but Smalling has now passed a medical and put pen to paper on a four year deal with the club.

This is good news for United as they had to beat off last minute competition from Arsenal to land the England under 21 international.

The club apparently see the youngster as an integral part of their first team plans for the future.

It has been a meteoric rise to prominence for the centre back who was playing for non-league Maidstone just two years ago.

He was plucked from obscurity by Roy Hodgson, a former player at Maidstone himself, and made just nine senior appearances for Fulham before earning his move to Old Trafford.

Both the player and United fans will now be hoping that working alongside established internationals like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, will help his development and see him become an important figure for United in the coming years.

What do you think of the signing? Do you reckon Smalling has what it takes to make it at United and, perhaps just as important, was it nice to beat Arsenal in the race to sign him?
